International students

Etudiant étranger
Foreign student

Every year, the EISTI welcomes international students in the family, and takes a great joy from this mix of cultures at the heart of the school, which is immensely beneficial for everybody. All classes are currently taught in French, meaning that a good understanding and use of French is necessary.

However, in order to make things easier for international students who don’t yet have a good enough level in French, the EISTI will organize an International Semester from September 2011. Learn more

Welcome Day

A welcome day for our international students is organized in September. This takes place in order to help the new students to get to know the EISTI, our programs as well as the teaching and administrative staff, in order to make all interaction and communication just that little bit easier. There is also a lot of help and information with all of the administrative tasks which need to be done, such as signing up for a Social Security number, opening a bank account and application for any applicable state benefits. A laptop computer is given to every student in the engineering curriculum for the duration of their studies at the school; this will happen for the international students on their "welcome day". Each foreign student is put in touch with a student buddy.

Buddying

Each international student has a student ‘buddy’, who is there to help them integrate in the best way possible with the other students and within the school. This ‘buddying’ or ‘tutoring’ (we prefer the term ‘buddying’ as students also have teaching ‘tutors’ who are in contact with the students for pedagogical, administrative as well as personal problems) is done on a voluntary basis (for the buddies), and brings to the foreground two of our most important values at the EISTI: openness and solidarity.

International Semester

In order to make access to its studies easier for non French-speaking students who are holders of a degree or equivalent certificate, the EISTI will have, from September 2011, an International Semester. This semester is organized by a group of students, and the teaching body is very aware and involved in it as well.

This semester is equivalent to the first semester of ING2 (the equivalent to the first year of a Master’s degree; the second year of the engineering curriculum), and takes place over 15 weeks, including 25 hours per week. There are three types of classes:

  • French as a Foreign Language,
  • Fundamental Science
  • Technology

The classes of French as a Foreign Language are taught during the whole semester; the classes of Science and Technology will be taught in English at the beginning, moving on to classes in French as the students gain confidence and skills within the language, leading them to full comprehension of classes within the language of French. The classes will finish with exams, which will be counted in the engineering curriculum and thus will be essential in the obtaining of the engineering diploma.

At the end of the International Semester, the students are able to follow classes in French and so rejoin the other members of their school year for the rest of their curriculum (as in, for the next two semesters of classes: 2nd Semester of Master 1 plus the 1st Semester of Master2).

They are also equipped to undertake their internships in a French company in order to obtain the engineering diploma.

If you are a student at one of our partner universities (see list here) with whom the EISTI has signed an exchange agreement (such as ERASMUS, CREPUQ or some other bilateral agreement), you must contact your International Relations Office who will give you many more details.
